An Cold plunge is a form of cold water immersion, similar to other methods such as plunge pools. They consist of submerging the body (not the head!) into cold water following exercise for a set period of time, at a set temperature
The exposure to cold water in a cold plunge triggers the body’s natural response mechanisms. As you immerse yourself, blood vessels constrict in a process known as vasoconstriction. This reaction helps conserve body heat, redirecting blood flow towards vital organs. Upon exiting the cold plunge, blood vessels dilate through vasodilation, promoting increased blood circulation and potentially enhancing recovery.
The temperature can vary, but is usually in the range of 39–45 degrees Fahrenheit or between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius. Immersion can last from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. No one suggests soaking for more than 3 minutes.
Cold plunges can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages, from children to the elderly, given that they are in good health and have no pre-existing conditions that may be exacerbated by the cold exposure.
Caution for Children: Children may have a different tolerance to cold, so it’s advisable to start with shorter durations and monitor their comfort levels.
