Cold Plunge

An Cold plunge is a form of cold water immersion, similar to other methods such as plunge pools. They consist of submerging the body (not the head!) into cold water following exercise for a set period of time, at a set temperature

How it Works

The exposure to cold water in a cold plunge triggers the body’s natural response mechanisms. As you immerse yourself, blood vessels constrict in a process known as vasoconstriction. This reaction helps conserve body heat, redirecting blood flow towards vital organs. Upon exiting the cold plunge, blood vessels dilate through vasodilation, promoting increased blood circulation and potentially enhancing recovery.

Temperature and timing

The temperature can vary, but is usually in the range of 39–45 degrees Fahrenheit or between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius. Immersion can last from 30 seconds to 3  minutes. No one suggests soaking for more than 3 minutes.

The best age to start

Cold plunges can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages, from children to the elderly, given that they are in good health and have no pre-existing conditions that may be exacerbated by the cold exposure.

Caution for Children: Children may have a different tolerance to cold, so it’s advisable to start with shorter durations and monitor their comfort levels.

Benefits of Cold Plunge

Reduces inflammation and swelling

When you take a cold plunge, the cold temperature narrows your blood vessels. This decreases blood flow to your muscles.

Relieves sore muscles

Cold plunge can help reduce muscle soreness after exercise by reducing inflammation and promoting blood flow to the affected muscles.

Lowers core body temperature

One study found that soaking in cold water for just under 10 minutes reduces your core body temperature after a workout.

Supports immunity

Cold plunge can help strengthen the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells.

Mitigates inflammation

Immersion in cold water can help reduce inflammation throughout the body, including reducing pain and promoting healing

Enhances circulation

Cold water exposure causes blood vessels to constrict and then dilate, which can improve blood flow throughout the body.
